Thanksgiving Hike

Astro and I went on a hike in Woods Canyon with friends Thanksgiving weekend.  This was Astro's first time carrying a pack on a long hike, it was a little over 9 miles.  His pack only weighed five pounds and didn't seem to slow him down.

Chris and Dan with Friday, Linus, and Astro.
Chris, on the right, organizes all of the pack hikes through the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America.  Thanks Chris!

This is the trail that we saw some cows on last winter.  No cows this time.  Actually there were no other people on the trail so the dogs got to do a lot of off leash hiking.

I was a little worried about letting Astro off leash in this area because there are a lot of cactus.  He did a great job though and had no cactus incidents.

A rare photo of me with a dog.

Astro did finally slow down a little towards the end of the hike.  He definitely likes to be out in front of the group exploring around though.  But, he won't go too far and always stops to wait or comes back to the pack.

At the end of the hike there was a nice walk along a small creek.  Walking along in the grass and oak leaves and taking a dip in the cool water was a great ending for the day.

I really do love the scenery out there. 9 miles is quite impressive. My kids are such slackers.

Beautiful hike. I'd love to do a nine-mile hike this time of year.

A little cold and wet for my tastes.

That's a long hike! I think Beryl would be flagging long before she hit the 9 mile mark even without carrying a 5lb pack! Frankie probably wouldn't though:) What gorgeous country to hike through. And what a lovely spot to finish at.

Looks like a great hike. What a wonderful way to spend your holiday. 9 miles. Damn. I would be carrying my dogs by the time we got back to the car. Are you still thinking of coming down for the gem show in February?

What a fun Thanksgiving activity! I love seeing the red rock and all the happy dogs.

It's amazing how fast our dogs learned about cacti. We visit the desert about 3-4 times per year, but they both know to watch out for the cacti! I'm amazed by how well they do.

That looks fantastic... buy 9 miles!! I'd be demanding to be carried at that distance... or at least Mum would! Deccy x

I am itching to get out and hike again, but I'm afraid it will probably be January before we get the chance. Bunny and Morgan are really missing it!

Your weather for the hike looks beautiful! *sigh*

Hey - nice to meet you. I found you through Romping and Rolling in the Rockies. I live in the outdoor Mecca of Seattle and own two weiner dogs who love to hike! We organize a hiking group for other weiner dogs and their owners.
